The use of plastics in the Colombian floriculture industry
Problem
The floriculture sector in Colombia has a long history and plays a vital role in the country’s agricultural exports. Over the years, it has faced challenges related to agronomic management, logistics, marketing, human resources, and sustainability concerns, such as organic waste disposal and the efficient use of electricity and water. The use of plastics in the industry has also been analized, leading companies to adopt sustainable materials and create closed loops where plastics are returned for recycling or transformation. As the importance of sustainability grows due to climate change, pollution, and resource conservation, international certifications and new regulations are pushing for a more sustainable floriculture sector.
Solution
The study, commissioned by the Dutch Embassy in Bogotá, makes a diagnosis of the sector collecting information via desk research, interviewed relevant parties and field visits, A total of 15 private companies, Dutch and Colombian, including exporters and input suppliers were interviewed and/or visited to collect information. Other parties interviewed included the Colombian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Asocolflores and representatives of international sustainability platforms.
Impact
Current initiatives and regulations aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector while maintaining its competitiveness in the global market. Prioritizing the reduction of waste before seeking substitutes can lead to both environmental and economic benefits, as it minimizes costs associated with waste management and the purchase of new materials.
While substitution is a more complex and costly process, involving not only material expenses but also time for the transition, it requires a shift in the mindset of companies and consumers. Accepting potential changes in product standards is essential. For example, just as local suppliers manage plastic transformation processes, there is potential to collaborate with Dutch suppliers to manage sleeves in the retail sector.
