Scoping study – Horticulture South West Nigeria
Problems
The Netherlands Embassy in Abuja wanted to start a new horticulture development programme in Nigeria. The new food programme was to take a private sector approach, focused on increasing crop productivity and increasing farmers’ incomes. Resilience led the implementation of a scoping study, supported by Agri-logic, a local consultancy. The main objective of the study was to identify the focus and scope of a new horticulture development programme and key intervention areas.
Solutions
We analysed the horticulture sector in Northern Nigeria, in particular around Kano and Kaduna. We interviewed more than 30 organisations and consulted horticulture projects that were already being implemented (such as Seeds4Change and a Sustainable Development Goal project). In addition, we analysed existing literature. We looked at key challenges in vegetable value chains, ranging from input supply to extension services, and from post-harvest management to logistics. In addition, we looked at business opportunities in South West Nigeria, in particular Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states.
Impact
As a result of the study, a tender was formulated for a 4-year €9 million project. The tender largely followed the advice and recommendations of the scoping study.
