Nazava water filters in Ethiopia

Problem

In most places in Ethiopia the water from the tap is not potable. Diarrhea is still a leading cause of death in Ethiopia.

Solution

Resilience started Nazava Trading PLC, a Joint Venture company between Resilience Water Filters of the Netherlands and Shayashone of Ethiopia. Together we started selling the award winning Nazava Water filter in Ethiopia. Nazava water filters turn dirty water into water that is ready to drink without the need for boiling. To date, over 3000 water filters have been sold to urban and rural households. The Nazava Riam water filter has a state-of-the art patented filter candle that filters 100% of bacteria and dust/mud particles. The filter has been tested in over 200 laboratories and can last for two years, filtering approximately 7,000 liters of water. The filter has a capacity of 2 x 16 liters and filters 2 liter/hour. All parts of the filter will be locally produced in Ethiopia (before the end of 2019), and the filter comes with a one-year guarantee. Nazava Ethiopia received a fund from the Netherlands government (FDW) to promote the use of safe water in Amhara region (2018-2021) in cooperation with the Bureau of Health of Amhara and the NGO International Development Enterprises (iDE). The project works through four components: (1) increasing knowledge and awareness on waterborne diseases through the health extension network; (2) social marketing of filter products through sales events and market promotions; (3) creating linkages with micro-finance institutions; and (4) local manufacturing of the filters.

Impact

The project will work in 60 woredas of Amhara targeting the sales of 50,000 water filters resulting in 250,000 people having access to safe drinking water. The project is applying for carbon credits under the gold standard because of reduced emission because less people will need to boil their water.
