Problems

The animal feed value chain in Ethiopia faces multiple challenges, including a lack of affordable and reliable inputs for feed production due to supply chain inefficiencies; inadequate chicken housing, which affects the well-being and productivity of chickens; a shortage of well-trained and experienced personnel in the industry; and the need for alternative animal feed production methods to mitigate the continuous price increment of inputs. These problems hinder the growth and sustainability of the animal feed sector and require innovative solutions to improve productivity, efficiency and sustainability.

Solutions

Resilience implemented a pilot training programme for entrepreneurs in Ethiopia’s animal feed sector. The programme aimed to test, contextualise and adapt the FAO’s Agripreneurship curriculum developed in collaboration with Orange Corners. The training programme provided specialised modules and activities based on a needs assessment that considered the demands of both Dutch and Ethiopian entrepreneurs across the animal feed value chain. The objective of the programme was to equip entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to address real-life challenges faced by (Dutch) companies operating in the sector.

Impact

Twenty-one entrepreneurs in the animal feed value chain were supported to develop innovative business ideas and improve their business skills. The pilot programme demonstrated the potential of the training programme to equip Ethiopian entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the animal feed sector. The winner of the pitching competition organised at the end of the programme was linked with a Dutch animal feed producing company. This linkage is expected to help the winning group to test and fine-tune their product. As observed from the implementation, continued collaboration between stakeholders is necessary to optimise the programme’s impact. Post-training support is also crucial for the entrepreneurs as they implement their newly acquired knowledge and skills. These measures will empower more entrepreneurs, drive sector growth and maximise the programme’s impact.
