Ethiopia-Netherlands Seed Partnership
Problem
The Ethiopia-Netherlands Seed Partnership aims to boost Ethiopia’s agricultural sector by enhancing access to high-quality seeds, promoting food security, and increasing climate resilience. With a focus on private sector involvement, the partnership aims to elevate the productivity and diversity of crops for 150,000 households by 50%, create 2,000 jobs, and expand sustainable agricultural practices. Along with the Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation and Stichting Wageningen Research Ethiopia, Resilience is responsible for the private sector component.
Solution
Within this component, Resilience is working with 10 domestic seed businesses. We are aiming to double their production and portfolio diversity. Activities include offering training and workshops to increase the seed businesses’ capacities, linking them with international seed producers to trial and register new varieties, and offering a financial product to increase their access to finance. Resilience supports actors within three specific value chains – leafy vegetables, forage and animal feed – reinforced by interventions focused on the seed side of each chain. Furthermore, Resilience supports the Ethiopian Seed Association (ESA) in strengthening its organisation and value proposition to the sector.
Impact
The partnership is currently being implemented, with outcomes and impact expected at the end of 2024.
