Bonsucro production standard v5.2 (online) training

Problem

As the leading global sustainability platform and standard for sugarcane, Bonsucro aims to accelerate the sustainable production and uses of sugarcane, with a focus on climate action, human rights and value in the supply chain. The Bonsucro Production Standard v5.2 helps sugarcane farmers and mills to identify and implement good practices that result in more sustainable production, and to measure productivity alongside key environmental and social impacts. It can also be used by sugarcane mills and farmers to demonstrate compliance with sustainable production practices and achieve certification. With the launch of the Bonsucro Production Standard v5.2, an online training course was required for all Bonsucro members and other interested parties to get acquainted with the standard, complemented by webinars and offline training sessions.

Solution

We designed a comprehensive, easy-to-follow, online training course for all Bonsucro members and interested parties, in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The course is freely available on the Bonsucro website, and includes explanations, videos, quizzes and exercises. Over 11 training modules, the course covers topics such as Bonsucro’s aims, requirements for meeting the standard, supporting documentation, risk management, and the new Bonsucro Calculator. The four-hour course can be taken at one’s own pace, allowing learners to stop and continue as they wish. Upon completion of the course, learners should be able to understand the content of the Bonsucro Production Standard v5.2 and to identify what they need to do to meet its requirements.

We also designed one-hour, interactive online webinars to be conducted with Bonsucro members. These webinars introduce the new standard and explain how it differs from previous standards. The objective is to convey relatively complex information in a short period while allowing for sufficient interaction between Bonsucro and its members.

Finally, we designed and facilitated two-day offline training sessions in Brazil, Colombia, Thailand and India, with similar objectives to the webinars. These sessions take a participatory and collaborative learning approach to stimulate intrinsic learning, in a fun and energetic training atmosphere.

Impact

Collectively, the three training elements (online course, webinars and offline training) increase learners’ understanding of the Bonsucro Production Standard v5.2, helping them to identify learning gaps in relation to working with the standard, that can then be resolved in consultation with Bonsucro.
