Market-Scan: Smart Water Probing

The challenge

Pipelife is one of the largest manufacturers of plastic pipes and fittings in Europe. Since 1947, it develops, manufactures and supplies a complete trendsetting program. Within its innovation program, PipeLife has developed the SmartProbe solution. SmartProbe makes it possible to perform online measurements in piped (drinking) water networks. The probe is equipped with various sensors, such as flow (Q), temperature (T), pressure (p) and EC (S/m). The design of the SmartProbe is based on existing technologies such that installation can be done without interrupting the water supply, a kind of Plug and Play.

In order to further develop the SmartProbe, PipeLife has contacted Resilience BV to carry out a market scan and shortlist potential partners who can: 1) design future proof ways to perform data extraction from the sensors.; 2) save the data by using cloud storage; 3) convert the data to information (modelling & dashboarding). The scan is carried out in the Netherlands with a focus on the drinking water sector.

The Solution

The market scan includes an overview of the smart water sector in the Netherlands, including recent developments, experiments and the players and concrete recommendations for partnerships.

In total, more than 75 companies were assessed and more than 19 experts have been interviewed. Based on these interviews, exhibitor lists of leading expos in the utility sector and internet search, a long list has been created. Companies have been assessed based on 14 criteria grouped in 4 categories. This ranking method supported a detailed comparison between the companies, assisting PipeLife in its next steps.
